The 2019 NER Concours d’Elegance is being held at one of the great mansions in Newport during a very exciting time for the motoring community in New England. The NER Concours will be held on October 5, 2019 on the lawn of the Chateau-sur-Mer estate on beautiful Bellevue Avenue. Our lead sponsor for 2019 is Porsche Warwick. Other sponsors include South Shore Autoworks and many other friends of our region. This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the activities that stretch for four days during Audrain’s Newport Concours & Motor Week. Additional information on all the week’s activities can be obtained at audrainconcours.com.

Our Concours format will change slightly this year. There will be three categories of judging. Two of the categories, Full Concours and Top Only, have been used in past Concours. The Full category will use traditional judging sheets, examining Porsche exteriors, interiors, storage compartments, engine compartments (where viewable), and wheels/wheel wells. The Top Only category will utilize informal judging by Top Only participants.

A new category, “Werks-style Judging”, will be added this year. PCA has been organizing Werks Reunion events at the Monterey and Amelia Island car weeks for several years now. Participants in Werks Reunion events still prepare their cars for the concours, but unlike traditional Full Concours or Parade style judging, Werks considers not only the appearance but also the history of the car, its usage by the owners, and overall aesthetic appeal. By combining both subjective and objective elements, Werks style judging creates a somewhat more relaxed environment and encourages participation by a wide variety of interesting Porsches. At Werks Reunions in Monterey and Amelia Island, you’ll find everything from highly authentic restored cars, Le Mans winning race cars, outlaw & hot rod style Porsche builds, and unique original cars.

When participating in a concours event, it can be a bit of an adjustment to get used to having judges checking over your car in detail. But be assured that this event is a learning process for everyone. The in-depth judging is as much to admire the details of each model in a way that rarely gets done as it is to be critical. At the core, it is a great car show where people are encouraged to spend a little extra time giving their cars the loving care we all want to spend on them.

As a layer of enjoyment that is new for us and new for New England, we are holding our event right in the middle of a brand new major world-class car event held right in Newport. Have you ever wanted to attend the Pebble Beach Concours in Monterey and attend their Motor Week? Well, now we’ll have that same type of event right here in Newport! There will be four days of amazing car activities of all kinds.

There will be a never-seen-before display of GM’s major concept styling exercise vehicles that will come right from General Motors to Newport. There will be a driving tour of invitational concours entrants starting at the Newport Bridge celebrating the bridge’s 50th anniversary (and the bridge will be temporarily fully closed for this!). A concert by John Legend is scheduled on Friday October 4th, the night before our Concours, at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the central gathering point for the full four days of events.

The Audrain Automobile Museum is holding their annual Gala at The Breakers mansion this year on Saturday. The whole weekend culminates with the main Audrain Concours event on Sunday, also held at the Breakers, where some of the world’s most valuable cars will compete. Hopefully, this gives you a small taste of the level of automotive events that will be taking place in Newport during that week. And we’ll be right in the middle of it!

Advanced registration for both Judged and Spectator Porsches is highly recommended. We anticipate many more participants this year, given the addition of the Werks judging class to our usual Full Concours and Top Only classes as well as the fact that our NER Concours will coincide with the Newport Car Week. Also given the location at Chateau-sur-Mer in the heart of the Motor Week activities, with limited parking nearby, we will have only so much space for participant and Porsche Park spectator cars. Only 200 Porsches can be accepted in either the Judged or Spectator areas, for a total of 400 Porsches. Day of the event fees, if space remains available, will be $60 for Judged and $30 for Spectator Porsches. Registration for Concours entrants and spectator parking will be available on porschenet.com June 15.

We hope you will add the Concours event to your busy schedule and come enjoy the day (or the full extended weekend) in Newport for what will be an amazing experience.
The Concours classes for the three categories (Full, Top-only, “Werks-style Judging”) are as follows: (adjusted as necessary based on entrants)

Newport Blocked Room Information for October 3-6, 2019

“Arrangements have been made with two Newport area motels to block rooms for the period October 3-6, 2019 for NER members that includes the date of the NER Concours, Saturday, October 5.  The expected attendance for the period is expected to place a premium on availability of local accommodations.  It is recommended that accommodations during this period be booked earlier rather than later.

The Mainstay Hotel, phone 401.849.9880, 151 Admiral Kalbfus Road, Newport, RI  02840, is the same hotel that has previously been used over the years for Zone 1 events. Rooms will be blocked for NER members, on a first come, first serve basis, until August 22, when any unused rooms, if any, will be released for the general public.  The Hotel will provide cordoned Porsche parking and a wash area. Trailer parking is also available. The group name to use when booking is “Porsche Club.”

The Ramada Inn, phone 401.846.3555, 425 East Main Road, Middletown, RI  02842, has rooms blocked for NER members until August 1, 2019.  There will not be a wash area available, so members should consider using the wash area at the Mainstay Hotel.  The group name is also “Porsche Club” for the Ramada Inn.”

Online Booking is Closed – please visit the event and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Please be patient with us if we do run short of space.
